CORE
Creating Opportunities for Real Education
CORE is an outreach programme available to 16-18 year olds based off-campus at College House in Barrow in Furness. You can enrol at CORE at any time in the year on one of a range of full-time courses. The courses at CORE provide a variety of subjects and experiences to develop your skills and confidence guiding you towards the next stage of your education or employment. Pathway Coaches make the learning relevant and fun, building on existing skills whilst using technology and practical tasks to cater for all learning styles.
Courses
L1 Exploring Employability Skills
Pathways offered at Level 1:
- Introduction to Health and Social Care (Adults, Children and Young People)
- Exploring Employability Skills
- Developing skills for Employment and Preparing for work in a practical Environment
All pathways also complete a selection of personal and social development units as well as those specific to the pathway they are enrolled on. These can range from prejudice and discrimination to assertiveness and decision making skills, they cover all the skills that all employers look for in employees regardless of which sector you want to work in.
All courses include maths and English at either GCSE or functional skills level, depending on previous qualifications gained. Each student will be assessed during induction to determine what level they are currently working at so that learning can be tailored specifically to their needs.
What Modules will you Study?
Level 1 Introduction to Health and Social Care (Adults, Children and Young People)
This is an introduction to caring for people of all ages, from birth to older adults, looking at various topics including communication in health and social care (adult, children and young people) early years and child care, safeguarding, caring for babies and children and the role and responsibilities of the adult social care worker. This course is ideal for anyone wanting to working in adult social care, child care or the health sector.
Level 1 Exploring Employability Skills
This pathway is an introduction to exploring and utilising employability skills in a range of vocational areas. Students will also be prepared by understanding personal development necessary for progression into the world of work, apprenticeships or further education. Topics include presentation skills, time management, preparing for interviews and other employability related subjects. This pathway would be ideal for students who would like to discover careers and vocational opportunities or for those unsure of their next steps.
Level 1 Developing skills for Employment and Preparing for work in a practical Environment
This pathway is designed for people who prefer to learn in a more hands on approach, who would like the opportunity to develop different skills for future employment and getting prepared for working in practical environments. This pathway includes team and confidence building skills, as well as life skills preparing students for independent living and would be ideal for anyone who is looking for a career in a practical vocational sector.

This is a full-time course over 1 year.

What are the entry requirements?
There are no formal entry requirements for CORE, only a willingness to learn and evidence of prior achievements/assessments that show your ability to work towards an Entry Level 3, Level 1 or Level 2 qualification. You will complete an assessment with us to ensure that you are placed on to the right level of course for English and Maths.
What opportunities will this lead to?
It could lead to level 2 courses at any of the Furness College campuses, further training, an apprenticeship, a supported internship or employment.

This is suitable for those who have already passed a level 1 qualification.
This qualification looks at enhancing employability skills and developing yur own understanding of the vocational sector in a more critical way. Our level 2 course is perfect for students looking to stay with CORE for another year or to progress onto a higher qualification in a similar subject area. You will study vocational skills and personal development units alongside hands on and practical tasks.

This is a full-time courses over 1 year.
