MP Visits The Sixth Form to Discuss Partnership with Get Further

Simon Fell, Conservative MP for Barrow & Furness, visited The Sixth Form this morning to discuss our partnership with Get Further that launched in September 2023. Get Further supports students with small group tutoring in English and maths, to help unlock future opportunities. They place specialist English and maths tutors in further education to help deliver a bespoke curriculum that builds confidence and skills in these core subjects.

Simon Fell said: “It was lovely as ever to visit The Sixth Form this morning and to find out how the 16-19 funding is being used locally to help support our students. It was good to talk to students who are currently on the programme and understand how valuable their experiences have been.”

Alex, one of our students studying English commented: “the classes are small, relaxed and enjoyable”.

Angel, studying both English and maths commented: “the classes are manageable around my timetable and don’t cause disruption”.

Students are assigned the same tutor throughout their studies to help build their confidence and ensure a strong relationship is built with their tutor.

Charlie, a tutor at Get Further commented: “I currently tutor students in both English and maths. Tutors are given in depth resources to help support their teaching, which I have found incredibly useful.”

Hilary Johns, Head of  Faculty, Sixth Form and Academic Programmes said: “Although we have only been working with Get Further for a term, we are seeing the benefits from the students who have signed up in developing their confidence and skills with English and maths. I hope to see positive resit results in January and look forward to continuing and strengthening our partnership with them in the future.”
