Introduction to the Hospitality Industry

This qualification is intended for learners who wish to explore or further develop their interest in the hospitality and catering sector. It will help you develop knowledge and skills towards independent living and learning and gaining an insight about the industry by encouraging you to learn, develop and practise basic catering and food safety skills and to develop a relevant back ground knowledge required for employment and/or career progression in the hospitality sector.

Course Content

What Modules will you Study?

This is a vocational qualification that introduces you to working in the hospitality industry and gives you the opportunity to study topics such as food safety, basic food preparation and cooking, serving food and drink, preparing the dining area for service, customer service in the hospitality industry and introduction to meal planning and preparation, healthy eating, introduction to food commodities, using a variety of kitchen equipment, preparing and displaying salads and sandwiches for service, introduction to pastry and cake preparation.

Throughout this qualification you will develop your practical skills, knowledge and understanding of relevant hospitality practices, health and safety, and customer service.

Every full time course will include a real experience of work within the industry. Maths and English form part of this course and will be assessed at the relevant levels.

How will I learn?

You will learn through a mix of directed learning, on line activities and practical workshops.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through practical observations in a real working environment, oral questions, written tasks, assignments and an exam.

How long is the course?

Full time over 1 year.

Entry Requirements

What are the entry requirements?

You’ll need at least 2 GCSEs at grades A*-G or 9–1, or a relevant Entry 3 vocational qualification.

You may also be asked to sit an initial assessment. The initial assessment must show that you are ready to study English and maths at Level 1, if you do not already hold GCSEs at grade C/4 or above in these subjects.

Are there any additional costs?

All students are expected to purchase and wear the college uniform to work in the college kitchen and the restaurant. This consists of a uniform of black chef trousers and jacket, apron, chef hat and safety shoes, front of house black shirt. The cost of the uniform is around £132.

You will be required to provide yourself with a pair of smart black trousers and shoes when working in the restaurant.
All other products and equipment necessary for the course will be provided by the college.

What opportunities will this lead to?

This qualification will prepare you for the next level of study. • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Hospitality Services Our students have progressed to a wide range of roles in within the hospitality industry including sous chef, catering and restaurant team members and managers. Our courses will support you to develop your skills in teamwork and communication, customer service, commitment, organisation and flexibility. This will make you highly adaptable and attractive to a range of employers.
