HNC Computing for England

Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) are technical qualifications that employers have helped develop, so you can get the right training and skills you need to succeed at work.

The Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Computing for England offers a broad introduction to the subject area. You will gain a wide range of sector knowledge that is tied to practical skills gained in research, self-study, directed study and workplace scenarios.

What Modules will you Study?

The HNC course in Computing for England (general pathway) comprises of the following eight units over two years:


Programming
Networking
Core unit
Professional Practice
Database Design and Development
Security
Managing a Computing Project (Pearson Set)
Software Development Lifecycles
Website Design and Development



How long is the course?

This part time course is over 2 years. 2 weekly evening sessions. 4 units will be studied the first year, and the remaining 4 modules the second year.

Entry Requirements

What are the entry requirements?

Applications are dealt with on case by case basis but generally the pre-requisites to have the best opportunity to succeed on the course are:

• a BTEC Level 3 qualification in IT, Computing or Computer Science
• a T-level in IT, Digital, Computing, etc.
• a GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C (or equivalent) and/or 9 to 4 (or equivalent) in subjects such as maths and English other related Level 3 qualifications
• an Access to Higher Education Diploma from an approved further education institution
• relevant work experience
• an international equivalent to the above qualifications.

Our Recognition of Prior Learning policy means that students’ previous learning and experience can be taken into account and they may be awarded certain qualifications or units of a qualification based on that learning or experience.

Progression

What opportunities will this lead to?

You could progress to a Level 5 or access a degree apprenticeship or full-time employment.

This course is designed to provide a strong foundation in core computing principles, practical skills and real world applications that are highly valued by employers. You will take part in group projects and interactive activities aimed at developing both your knowledge and your confidence in computing. Our focus is on preparing you for a successful future in the computing sector.
