BA (Hons) Education (top up)

The BA (Hons) Education (Top up) programme recruits directly on to level 6 modules. It is designed to enable students to study education either as a subject of interest, progression from a relevant foundation degree or as a possible route into teaching. Please note this top up degree does not give students QTS status and progression into teaching is not available through Furness College.

Course Content

What Modules will you Study?

In semester 1, you will study

The Education of Vulnerable Young People
Families, Schools and Society
The Professional Role in Context

In semester 1, you will study

Policy and Practice in Educational Settings
Unpicking the Curriculum and

You will also be required to submit a 6000 – 8000 word dissertation on an approved education-related topic of your choice. The dissertation module is ongoing throughout the academic year and is studied on a tutorial basis to enable individual guidance and support to be provided.

This course is approved by the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

How will I learn?

As experienced educators we are very conscious that our teaching and learning strategies meet the needs of the learners.

There will be lectures, seminars, tutorials and group work to enable active participation in the learning process.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment includes essays, group academic poster presentations, dissertation plan and a 6000 – 8000 word single dissertation

For service related complaints, unrelated to the quality of learning, please contact the Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA). HE students have a right of access to the OIA as long as the provider’s internal procedures and Partner University’s procedures have been exhausted.

Entry Requirements

What are the entry requirements?

Foundation Degree in Early Years or another relevant subject Certificate in Education.

It is a requirement that a DBS check has been undertaken before entry to the programme.

Progression

What opportunities will this lead to?

Further study at Postgraduate level, such as one of the MA programmes (both taught and research based). These are designed to meet the interests and needs of students and are developed accordingly. Progression to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Ashleigh Patterson is studying a BA Hons in Education and Professional Studies after achieving a Foundation Degree in Children, Young People and their Services. She said: “For others thinking about Higher Education, I would say it’s not as scary as you may anticipate.
