College Football Academy students train with FA at Villa Park

Two Furness College students from the newly-formed College Football Academy were invited to Aston Villa’s ground for a training session with a difference.

Josh Millward and Jack McKechnie, who study a Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Sport while playing for Barrow AFC, travelled to Villa Park in Birmingham to learn ways to inspire others to play the beautiful game.

They were selected as student activators for the college as it works towards being made an FA Learning and Development Hub for football.

Matt Jefferson, who is the college’s physical activity co-ordinator, said in this role Josh and Jack will help him increase the number of students across both the college campuses – Channelside and Rating Lane – who play football.

“They came away with some great ideas and inspiration for developing football within our college and community,” he said. “Both Jack and Josh are currently part of our new academy link with Barrow AFC and this is a fantastic way for them to upskill themselves and get some valuable experience for their futures.”

The activators will focus on developing female and disability sectors as well as improving opportunities for competitive and recreational football across the student population.

The College Football Academy was launched by Furness College in partnership with Barrow AFC in September for 16-18 year olds who want careers in sports and related industries

There are currently 11 students on the programme, who split their time between study at the Channelside campus and playing, coaching, training and learning about the business aspects of the club at Holker Street stadium.
