College Football Academy (Barrow AFC)

Course Content

This course gives students the opportunity to study sport through joint delivery between Furness College and newly promoted National Football League team Barrow AFC. It aims to develop player’s technical ability alongside academic skills/knowledge, preparing learners for a job in the current sports market. This programme will ready learners for successful progression to careers in the football, sport and fitness industry or progression to further study at University level.

How long is the course?

Level 3 - The BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport is two years in duration and when achieved is equivalent UCAS points to studying 3 A Levels. In the first year of study, you will work towards the BTEC Level 3 90-Credit Diploma. Following successful completion of this qualification, you will be able to progress to the BTEC Extended Diploma.
Level 2 - The NCFE Level 2 Diploma in Sport is one academic year in duration and is equivalent to four GCSE passes at grade 4. (Successful completion of the programme will allow progression to Level 3).

How will I learn?

Along with the practical football element there will be supporting classroom based sessions to raise awareness of the theoretical underpinning and how this applies to football performance. Through a wide variety of individual and group tasks you will develop a range of key employability skills and personal attributes. There will also be regular opportunities to gain work based experience working with different sports coaches, organisations and a wide range of participants. There is a significant emphasis on developing your practical coaching skills through volunteering and sports leadership opportunities.

Are there any additional costs?

Due to the practical nature of the course and particularly the use of practical assessments students are required to purchase a uniform from the college shop. This consists of a t shirt, 1/4 zip, shorts, track pants and socks in addition to trainers, football boots and shin pads.

A requirement for the programme is to undertake a relevant work experience placement in the sport, leisure or fitness industry. Due to the nature of these work experience placements some organisations require a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check before the placement commences. A DBS check will cost in the region of £44.

Entry Requirements

What are the entry requirements?

The programme of study you will follow will be based upon the grades you achieve at GCSE level. You will be placed on one of the following programmes of study.

Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma requires five GCSEs at grade 4 or above (including maths and English) or other equivalent qualifications and keen interest in a Football.

Level 2 NCFE Level 2 Diploma requires at least four GCSEs at grades 2-3 or equivalent e.g. a Level 1 qualification.
