Student Engagement Team

The Furness College School Engagement Team is dedicated to working in partnership with schools and colleges to raise awareness of the further education and higher education programmes available, in order to help young people make informed decisions about their future and help raise aspirations.

We offer a variety of activities, presentations and workshops, both at college and in schools, to enable students to discover the range of opportunities available to them when they leave school. Our team also goes into schools to complete the entry interviews for sixth form and can organise campus tours for prospective students.

The School Engagement Team consists of Lisa Smith and Bridgette Robinson. They work across both Channelside and The Sixth Form campuses.

Lisa Smith previously worked as a senior teaching assistant at Burlington and Roose junior schools and, more recently, as a medical receptionist. Following GCSEs at Dowdales School and A Levels at The Sixth Form, her first experience of Furness College was a welding course at Anson Street in 1994, for which she received a distinction. She completed her Level 3 NVQ in Children and Young People’s Workforce at Channelside in 2013 and has worked in educational settings since then.

Bridgette Robinson has previously worked as an educator, learning mentor and restorative justice facilitator, and more recently as a community engagement officer at a local charity.  She has over thirty years’ experience working in both local primary and secondary schools. Bridgette has a BSc (Hons) in Social Sciences alongside Diplomas in Criminology and Social Care.

Please contact Lisa or Bridgette for any Furness College school engagement activities.

We offer a wide range of Twilight Tasters at both of Furness College’s campuses available to Year 10 and 11 pupils. These were introduced for the first time in 2015 and have proved very popular with young people. Students commit to two, three or four weeks of after-school activities – the length and times are different for each curriculum area. These sessions are very hands-on and provide information about career opportunities in the sector.

Dates and times TBC.

These taster sessions provide students with the opportunity to experience a range of subjects at our Rating Lane campus and take part in a range of fun and interactive challenges linked to curriculum areas at our Channelside campus.
