Young professionals needed to shape town’s future

A board that aims to help shape the future of Barrow is urgently recruiting four more young professionals.

The Futures Board was set up to give 18-35 year olds, from a diverse range of backgrounds, a chance to help develop plans to revolutionise the town’s economy.

It is part of Barrow’s Town Deal – an initiative to secure £30 million of funding to transform the area which uses the hashtag #brilliantbarrow on social media.

Several projects have been submitted for consideration as part of the scheme, including a Barrow Learning Quarter with university campus, work to unlock Barrow’s Marina Village for future development, improved walking and cycling infrastructure throughout the town, better housing, the creation of community resilience hubs and enhanced business support.

The Futures Board was established to reflect the perspective of those that will benefit from any investment in the schemes in years to come.

But with only five members, board acting chair Liam Edgley, who is the Student Liaison Officer at Furness College, said more people were needed to work with the main Town Deal board and put forward their ideas to future proof the town.

“The board formed in March just as the Covid-19 lockdown came into effect and we’ve been working throughout on ways we can improve the town for younger people.

“The changes we support here will affect the way we live, shop and work in Barrow for years to come. Young people from all backgrounds deserve a say. After all, it’s our future.

“Joining the board is also a good way for 18 to 35-year-olds to share their innovative ideas and give back to our wonderful community and ensure there are bright and prosperous years ahead. It could also enhance their own CV.”

Applicants must live or work in the Barrow area. Anyone interested in applying can send their CV and a cover letter explaining why they’d like to join the board to liam.edgley@furness.ac.uk by 5pm on October 12th.
