Students delighted to secure university places

Students from Furness College are celebrating this week after achieving a qualification that opens a door to university or a degree apprenticeship.

The students have achieved their Access to Higher Education diploma after studying for a year at the Channelside campus.

They are now progressing onto universities or are progressing onto apprenticeships which include the police force.

One of the students celebrating their results was Emma Wren who has had to balance family life alongside her studies.

Emma, previously went to university when she was 19 to study graphic design but after she successfully graduated she realised it wasn’t the field she wanted to go into.

“I have really enjoyed the access course and it has been nice to do something for myself again. My daughter has been unwell so I have had to care for her and make she is well enough before I even thought about bringing myself back to education.”

“I have a lot to balance with my daughter but whatever I have needed the college has catered for. I have met some great people and I thought I would be the oldest but there is a lot of people my age.”

Emma is now going off to study midwifery at the University of Cumbria after seeing how stretched maternity services are.

Thomas Biggs chose the Access to University course to help him gain UCAS points and progress to the next stage of his learning.
“I want to be a police officer and the access course is helping me achieve this career. I am now applying for apprenticeships in the police force.”

“It is well worth it and helpful if you have to balance any other responsibilities such as work or family life.”

Keith Wardle, who oversees the Access course at Channelside, said how impressed he was with his students’ results.

“The students have achieved outstanding results once again this year, which allows them to progress to University and apprenticeships.”

“The Access course is a fantastic opportunity for those aged 19+ who want to change careers and return to education after stopping study at GCSE-level and especially now with the NHS looking to grow its workforce it is ideal for those wanting to move into Nursing, Midwifery or Paramedic Science.”

The Access to University course is a one-year course with three pathways to choose from: allied health professions, social sciences and a new pathway business.
