Sixthformers take top spot in university psychology competition

Talented A Level psychology students from Barrow Sixth Form scooped first and second spot in a competition run by Lancaster University.

The seven sixthformers, split into two teams, took part in the Lancaster University Psychology Faculty challenge where they were tasked with creating an academic poster and three-minute video on the question: How can psychology help us communicate more effectively?

Noah Richards, Ella Drury and Ella Gonzalez made up one of the teams and won the challenge with Dr Jess Wang from the psychology faculty praising the team as displaying skills that would be impressive at undergraduate degree level.

Dr Wang said the winners were especially aware of the times we live in and the challenges that brings, including fake news, and that came across in their video.

Macy Hindmarsh, Aliyah Turner, Ellen Gallagher and Corey Jacobs made up the other team of sixthformers, who were joint runners up.

Ella Drury said the challenge had improved everyone’s communication and teamwork skills.

“It was a brilliant experience to work as a team to produce something that we were all proud of, and it was very interesting to do further research outside of our exam specification on how psychology can help us in real life situations. Our research has helped us to further understand the effects of fake news and how to avoid falling for it.”

Candis Douglas, lecturer in psychology at Barrow Sixth Form College, said the students had done a brilliant job and were worthy winners.

“The independent work put in from the students has been absolutely fantastic and they have needed little help from me and I have been so impressed with the standards they have set for themselves.”
