Psychology students support groundbreaking research

Psychology students from Barrow Sixth Form College enjoyed a day of discovery doing hands-on tasks in the research labs at Lancaster University.

Thirteen sixthformers, from both first year and second year classes, worked alongside current PhD students as the campus held a research day for A Level students.

They took part in groundbreaking research including testing whether a baby could recognise faces and voices in the womb, how the brain works at different stages of people’s lives and how early children can recognise grammar rules in sentences.

Corey Jacobs, who is in his second year studying psychology, biology and sociology at sixth form, said: “I’ve applied to study a psychology degree at Lancaster so it was a chance to see what’s ahead as it expanded on what we have learnt in class. There was a great variety of different areas to see and take part in from language and cognitive psychology to developmental psychology and perception.”

Ella Danz, who is in her first year studying psychology, law and health and social care, said it had been fun. “It was so good to take part, to look around all the areas and see the campus.”

Specialist psychology tutor at Barrow Sixth Form Candis Douglas said it had been a really worthwhile event and a showcase of the university’s main four research strengths in infancy and early development, language and cognition, perception and action and social processes.

“It was a valuable opportunity for our students to take part in real-life research gain an understanding of how specific research needs to be and think about the positive impact it can have on people’s lives.

“The university staff have been in touch to say the students were a credit to college and really made the most of the day.”
