L3 Installation and Maintenance Electrician - Royal Apprenticeship

This occupation is found in the industrial, commercial, and residential construction, engineering, and power industries. The broad purpose of the occupation is to install, maintain and repair electrical systems in industrial, commercial and residential environments including communal areas.

Electricians may work on the installation, initial verification and testing, commissioning, and maintenance of low voltage (up to and including 1000 V or AC 1500 V DC) electrical and electronic equipment. Electricians can also work on the maintenance of electrical and electronic installations including automated production systems.

Level 3 Installation and Maintenance Electrician apprentices are required to attend Furness College one day per week for Off the Job Training. These sessions are both practical and theory based and delivered by expert tutors. Apprentices are supported to gain and develop relevant Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours.

Course Content

What Modules will you Study?

Practical:

  • Install wiring systems, cable tray, conduit, trunking - Test and inspect
    installations

  • Fault find and diagnose issues in electrical systems - Repair and maintain
    existing installations

  • Wire circuits, lighting, sockets, distribution boards - Terminate and
    connect cables safely

  • Measure, cut, bend, and fix containment accurately - Follow wiring
    diagrams and technical drawings

  • Apply diagnostic and problem-solving techniques - Carry out inspection
    & testing, continuity, insulation resistance, polarity

  • Install and support cables – Use a range of tools, materials, equipment,
    and components

  • Effective communication. - Safe isolation procedures

  • Written and verbal communication techniques - Mathematical and scientific
    techniques
Theory:

  • Health & safety legislation Electricity at Work Regulations

  • Earthing and bonding principles - Risk assessments and hazard
    awareness

  • Codes of practice, the requirements of the current edition of the Wiring
    Regulations (BS7671) and other relevant standards

  • Building Regulations.

  • Online knowledge assessment

How much will this course cost?

There are no course fees for apprentices.

Apprentices will receive a wage from their employer.

Individual employers will set the selection criteria for their apprenticeships.

Progression

What opportunities will this lead to?

Once qualified, some electricians may choose to become self-employed contractors. This apprenticeship aligns with Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) for Technician Member (TMIET). Progression onto advanced level 4-6 apprenticeships. In some instances, you can go on to higher education in a College or University.
