College appoints team of Sport Ambassadors

Furness College has pledged its commitment to student fitness, health and wellbeing by appointing a series of Sport Ambassadors.

It has recruited leaders from its sports diploma programmes to encourage participation in the wide range of sports offered at Channelside and Rating Lane sixth form in a project backed by the Association of Colleges.

Charlotte White and Rebecca Jones-Irwin are the This Girl Can Ambassadors, Jack McKechnie and Alex Thompson are now Inclusive Ambassadors and David Johnson-Herdman, Sam Johnston and Mitchell Kay are Mental Health Ambassadors.

College Physical Activity Coordinator Matt Jefferson said the ambassadors will be coming up with ideas to help other students overcome barriers to sport and join in activities.

“It has been challenging for everyone to keep fit in body and mind under the confines of a global pandemic but we know that sport can make an incredible difference.

“We have a state-of-the art gym and fitness studio that is open to our students and we’d love to see our ambassadors work together to ensure every machine in the gym is in use and classes are full because we know the positive impact to people’s fitness and wellbeing.”

David Johnson-Herdman David, who is in his first year of level 3 foundation diploma in sport, said: “We are all really looking forward to getting involved in such a brilliant programme and spreading mental health awareness throughout the college.”

Alongside the Ambassador programmes, the college has appointed two FA activators – Joshua Ward and Royanna Davies – to work closely with our partners to raise football activity and participation throughout the college and beyond.

Royanna, who is in her first year of the level 3 foundation diploma in sport,  said she was delighted to be selected. “I currently play football for Morecambe Ladies and I know first-hand how sport it can help a person mentally and physically. I will be trying to raise the participation levels of football activity in the college, as it is a good sport to get involved in and anybody can do it”.
