Students shine at awards event - Furness College, Cumbria

• Prizewinners at Furness College’s Channelside Student Awards 2023.

Talented students from Furness College were recognised for their achievements at a special ceremony of celebration this week.

More than 20 students received trophies, certificates and prizes ranging from £200 to £500 at the inaugural Channelside Student Awards in front of staff, family and friends.

They ranged from subject awards to learners who were nominated for their success in their studies in the face of challenging circumstances.

Chloe Beecroft picked up the Against All Odds Award after overcoming serious health concerns to complete her catering course with flying colours. Those at the event heard how she impresses every day with her commitment and determination.

Kye Smith, a construction student from Millom who cycles to college from the station each day, won the Principal’s Award for his resilience and determination and always putting extra effort in to his work. ‘He supports others and is more like a member of the team than a student,’ his nomination read.

Charlotte Harris, who won the subject award for craft engineering, was named Furness College’s Outstanding Student of the Year for the progress she has made.

Presenting her with her award, Assistant Principal for Curriculum Sue Hannan said after a rocky start joining college from school six years ago she had got herself firmly on track, worked hard and made the most of the opportunities presented to her.

“The comments from staff include things like ‘fantastic learner’ ‘enthusiastic’ ‘mentors others’ ‘cannot praise her enough’,” said Sue. “She has proved that hard work and effort pay off.”

Charlotte, whose ambition is to become a pipe welder and has secured an apprenticeship, said: “With my tutor’s support, I’ve achieved a qualification I’m really proud of.”

Other winners included Students’ Union member Will Hubbold, who won the Health & Social Care Student of the Year. He said: “College has supported me over the last few years and although I’m sad to leave, I’m excited to go on to Edgehill University to study psychology in the future.”

Kate Colebourn, Director of Curriculum, Technical and Higher Education said it was a fantastic event and praised the students for their achievements.

“Seeing the faces on the learners in anticipation of getting their awards, and then of the staff and family supporting them was just magic and a huge reminder of why we do what we do. Huge congratulations to all the winners.”
