Students build skills for the future

Construction experts shared top tips with students seeking jobs in the sector at Furness College this week.

Representatives from civil engineering firm Story Contracting visited the Channelside campus to promote employability skills as part of the college’s National Careers Week.

The 18 Level 1 construction students attended the work experience event.

Stuart Bowman, Senior Communications and Digital Executive at the Carlisle-based company, said they were involved in a number of projects including the A595 Grizebeck improvement scheme, Jubilee Bridge upgrade and work with defence company BAE Systems.

As part of the scheme they are engaging with local communities and particularly young people to improve employability skills through workshops which include CV building and cover letter writing.

The students took part in mock interviews with Story Contracting staff and received hints and tips in how to perform in an interview.

They were also tasked with building a bridge which was made with limited supplies and judged on how it held up and the foundations of it.

Stuart Bowman, Senior Communications and Digital Executive, said they wanted to inspire the next generation into the industry.

“There is a skills shortage in the construction industry in Cumbria and we want to engage with young people and let them know the different opportunities available.”

“For Story the motto is ‘do it right’ and by engaging with communities even when the job is finished the community is left with a positive impact and we are able to create a lasting positive legacy.”

Debbie Gribble, Work Experience Coordinator at Furness College helped organise the event said it is great to enable students to have that contact with employers.

“It helps build confidence and skills for the students. They get hands-on practical experience from the employers with real working tasks and people.”

The event was part of a series of sessions the college ran for National Careers Week. These included CV building session from Inspira and former health and social care students Becky Tudor and Louisa Warner delivered a session on Occupational Health.
