Sixth form gets funding for transformation

Barrow Sixth Form College will undergo a multi-million pound upgrade after securing funding to carry out an internal transformation.

Furness College has secured a share of the Town Deal funding as well as a grant from the Government’s Further Education Capital Transformation Fund and other investment from college reserves.

The campus, on Rating Lane, opened in 1979 and the money will be spent on creating new learning spaces to meet the needs of its students.

Furness College Principal and Chief Executive Professor Andrew Wren said: “We are delighted to secure a share of Government funding through the Town Deal and the FE Transformation Fund which, along with other funding and investment from the college, will enable us to carry out a significant transformation of Barrow Sixth Form at its Rating Lane campus.

“Investment in this specialist campus is very welcome as we seek to create invigorating new spaces within an established building that suit the educational and study needs of our students today. Our sixth form is the number one choice for school leavers in South Cumbria who come to study A Levels, CTECs and new T Levels, and our campus has a long track record of success in helping students progress into university education, higher and degree apprenticeships, and employment.

“We will be working closely with our education partners, including the project lead the University of Cumbria, on the Learning Quarter Project to ensure the young people of this town benefit from all the opportunities this will bring.”

Welcoming the announcement that the college was to receive a share of the Government’s Further Education Capital Transformation Fund, MP for Barrow and Furness, Simon Fell, said: “I am delighted to learn that Furness College is one of 62 FE colleges or designated institutions that were successful in the FE Capital Transformation Fund bidding round and will secure a share of £405 million in Government investment.

“Professor Wren and his team work tirelessly to deliver the best FE provision possible for local people, and this investment will help them to provide an even better provision, and to compete on a more level playing field with other FE providers in our region.”
