Pupils pitch ideas in Dragons’ Den

Future sixthformers showcased their marketing skills when they took part in a Dragons’ Den-themed task at Barrow Sixth Form College this week.

Around 80 Year 11 students attended the Spring into Sixth Form event at Furness College’s Rating Lane campus, which aims to help students settle into college and meet their peers before they start in September.

The students were split into eight teams with pupils from Cartmel Priory, Chetwynde, Dowdales, Furness Academy, John Ruskin, Millom School, St. Bernard’s, UVHS and Walney School all taking part.

They completed a treasure hunt challenge, designed to help them navigate their way around the campus, and collected resources on the way to help them in the task.

The pupils’ were then challenged to create a new slogan and logo for the college.

They had 20 minutes to generate their ideas, design a poster and prepare a pitch which they would deliver to the four college ‘dragons’ supported by team leaders, which were made up of current Honours Students, Students’ Union members and tutors.

Each team got three minutes to pitch their ideas to the ‘dragons’, explaining the reasoning for their choices and ultimately try to convince them that their slogan was the best.

The college ‘dragons’ were made up of Director of Curriculum Helen Gibson, Marketing & Communications Manager Kathryn Kittley, Subject Leader for Humanities Steve Buckley and Tutor of Politics and History Caroline Buckley.

From a strong set of presentations, they picked Team 3 who designed a double logo with the slogan ‘Furness College a place for knowledge’ including a triangle-shaped logo in the college’s brand colours to show how students work together to learn together.

Hilary Johns, Head of Sixth Form, said the event was fantastic with a buzzing atmosphere. “The Dragons’ Den-themed event was great fun and it gave everyone a chance to express their creativity and skills, I was particularly impressed with the confidence they all showed to speak in front of the four college dragons and the ingenuity of the slogans they came up with,” she said.

“It was wonderful to see so many pupils getting stuck in with the tasks and pushing themselves out their comfort zone to meet new people which will help them when they start college.”
