National Careers Week – Liam Edgley

Name:
Liam Edgley

Education:
Barrow Sixth Form College (A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry)

Employment:
Student Liaison Officer at Furness College – 2019-2020
BAE Systems Project Management Higher Apprentice 2021 – present

“After college I took an employed ‘gap year’ as the student liaison officer at Furness College working with the Students’ Union, helping to develop the student learner voice, recruiting student reps, organising socials and I did all that for 18 months before progressing onto BAE Systems as a higher apprentice. My career ambition is to become a chartered project manager and maybe someday become a director or a manager at BAE Systems.

“Studying at Barrow Sixth Form really helped me raise my aspirations because the amount of extra-curricular activities to get involved with there is absolutely incredible. Companies like BAE Systems get good students applying with excellent grades so I think extra-curricular stuff can make you stand out and have something to talk about at interview.

“So far, I’ve found working for a company like BAE Systems is brilliant because they really push the human aspect of it and to have a good work/life balance.

“My career advice to anyone is that people always respond well to you giving 100 per cent to each task, even if a small task, you should put the effort in. If you are eager and willing it goes a long way as you can build a reputation of being reliable. I’d say take as many opportunities as you can, don’t be afraid to take things on. Everything adds to your CV and gives you more to talk about.”
