Level 2 Technical Occupational Entry for the Early Years Practitioner

If you are interested in starting a career working with young children, this part-time course will give you the knowledge, practical skills and experience you need to take your first steps into the early years sector.
Designed for adults aged 19+, the course covers the development, care and education of babies and young children from birth to seven years, with a particular focus on working with children from birth to five.
You do not need previous experience or qualifications in early years to study this course. Alongside your college studies, you will develop practical skills through a placement in a nursery or early years setting for a minimum of one day per week. This will give you valuable experience of putting what you learn into practice while developing the skills and confidence needed to work with young children.
The qualification meets the Department for Education's Early Years Practitioner criteria and can support progression into employment within the early years sector or further study at Level 3.
Assessment is through a portfolio of evidence, allowing you to demonstrate the knowledge and practical skills you develop throughout the course.

Course Content

What Modules will you Study?

Throughout the course, you will develop an understanding of the important role early years practitioners play in supporting babies and young children to learn, develop and thrive.
You will study:
• Roles and responsibilities of the Early Years Practitioner – understand your role when working with babies, young children, families and other professionals.
• Health and safety – learn how to provide a safe and healthy environment for babies and young children.
• Equality, diversity and inclusive practice – explore how early years settings can meet individual needs and provide inclusive experiences for every child.
• Safeguarding, protection and welfare – understand how to recognise and respond to concerns and help keep babies and young children safe.
• Children's development – learn about the different stages of development and how practitioners can support children's progress.
• Care routines – develop the skills needed to support appropriate care routines for babies and young children.
• Planning activities and learning opportunities – learn how to support the planning and delivery of activities, purposeful play and educational programmes.
• Promoting play – understand the importance of play and how it supports children's learning and development.
• Health and wellbeing – explore how early years practitioners can encourage healthy lifestyles and support children's overall wellbeing.
• Physical activity – learn how to provide opportunities for babies and young children to be physically active.
• Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) – develop an understanding of how to support babies and young children with additional needs.
• Positive behaviour – learn approaches for promoting and supporting positive behaviour in early years settings.
• Partnership working – understand the importance of working effectively with parents, carers, colleagues and other professionals.
• Preparing children for school – learn how early years practitioners can support children as they prepare for the transition to school.
Your placement will be an important part of the course, giving you opportunities to apply your learning and demonstrate your practical skills in a real early years environment. Placements should be arranged by applicants prior to starting the course.

Entry Requirements

What are the entry requirements?

This course is for adults aged 19+ who are interested in developing the knowledge and practical skills needed to work with babies and young children. You do not need to have previous experience or qualifications in early years to apply.
As practical experience is an essential part of the qualification, you will need to:
• Have access to a suitable nursery or early years placement for a minimum of one day per week for the duration of the course.
• Be willing and able to complete the practical elements of the qualification within an early years setting.
• Have a clear Enhanced DBS check in place before undertaking your placement.
Your placement must provide suitable opportunities for you to work with babies and young children and demonstrate the practical skills required to achieve the qualification.

Progression

What opportunities will this lead to?

The qualification can support progression into roles such as: • Early Years Practitioner • Pre-school Practitioner • Classroom Assistant You could also continue your studies by progressing to a Level 3 Technical Occupational Entry for the Early Years Workforce qualification or another relevant Level 3 course. This provides a progression route for adults who want to build their skills and qualifications further, opening up opportunities for continued study and career development within early years, education and related sectors.
