Career-minded students focus on their futures

Students at Furness College have been challenged to focus on their futures as part of a pledge for National Careers Week.

From a paramedic to teacher, solicitor to dancer, nurse to health and safety officer, they have shared their career ambitions and spoken about how they want to achieve them.

Those who took part in the initiative included apprentices and full-time students from Channelside alongside A level students at the sixth form on Rating Lane.

Sarah Carter, who is the Student Services Manager and Careers Leader, said the college wants to remind students about the importance of planning their futures and the support offered to help them reach the goals.

“We want to ensure each of our students is able to achieve their dream career and make them aware of the support we can offer at college help them reach their goals,” she said.

The college has been running a series of events as part of National Careers Week. Guest speakers from the NHS came in to Channelside to talk to students about careers in healthcare and there have been drop in sessions by Inspira and the National Citizen Service as well as Job Centre Plus who have helped students improve their existing CVs.

Claire Croskery, lecturer in business and marketing, led a session on interview techniques and encouraged students to consider the wide range of careers available.

She said: “It is important that we as a college are encouraging our students to enhance their employability skills on top of their academic and technical learning. Whether they are considering their career options or have just started on the first step of the career ladder in an apprenticeship, we want them to look ahead and realise there is no limit to what they can achieve.

In addition, the college is holding interview technique workshops for students next week and an introduction to higher education with Channelside students taking part in a panel to talk about their experiences studying degrees.

The college has been posting on its social media throughout the week using the hashtag #NCW2019
