Allergy awareness mission for computing degree student

Furness College university degree course student Tom Kennedy has been working on a project to improve understanding of children’s allergies. The BSc (Hons) Degree Computing student worked on a webpage within University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Trust website.

He used his knowledge from the course to design the layout and ensure it was easy to navigate and ensure all the relevant allergy information the NHS had provided him with was included.

Tom, an aspiring software engineer, said the skills he learnt on his course enabled him to complete the project successfully.

“My web development classes were extremely useful in knowing the fundamentals of what makes up a good website and how to utilise the tools and tricks taught to us correctly,” he said. “Additionally, my classes in HCI (Human Computer Interaction) were also extremely beneficial, especially for the user interface.”

Tom’s passion for computing started at UVHS where he studied general IT.

“I had always decided I wanted to get further into Computer Science with Programming.”

Tom said that he loved his time at Furness College and made many great friends.

“One of the parts I’ve enjoyed the most is being able to meet so many amazing people, both students and staff, all of which from different backgrounds with a shared passion in the subject, it’s allowed me to create some truly amazing friendships with people that I just couldn’t imagine not meeting.”

He also said that he would like to leave a mark of inspiration.

“The ability to impact as many lives as possible for the better while being able to truly express myself in my work. The idea that if something I was involved in or even created, helped someone in some way. That’s what really matters to me.”

Tom’s advice to anyone coming to college would be ‘chase your dream’.
