The Level 1 DIY Award in Construction is a short evening course which will support your understanding and basic practical skills.
Our evening classes are exclusive to adults, taught in our workshop in small groups. Our evening courses are suitable for those considering a new career in a trade.
We also offer courses in bricklaying, plastering, plumbing, carpentry & joinery and painting and decorating for next steps if you wish to progress.
Our classes run throughout the year in six weeks blocks.

Funding may be available age 19+, unemployed or earning less than £25,750 per year, subject to residency eligibility criteria.
Course Content
What Modules will you Study?
This Do It Yourself (Construction) course is designed to give learners practical skills in plastering, plumbing, painting, brickwork, and carpentry over six weeks. Starting with tool basics and safety and an introduction to the construction industry, participants will quickly move into hands on sessions covering surface preparation, plaster application, and simple plumbing fixes like repairing leaks and installing taps. Painting and decorating techniques will follow, focusing on achieving a finish on walls, ceilings, and woodwork.
The second half of the course introduces brickwork fundamentals, including mixing mortar and laying bricks for small projects, and carpentry skills such as accurate measuring, cutting, and simple joinery for shelves or frames. Each module combines demonstrations with practical exercises, ensuring learners leave confident to tackle common home repairs and improvements.

Entry Requirements
What are the entry requirements?
Our adult learning short courses and evening classes are aimed at those aged 19 and over.
There are no formal entry requirements other than an interest in the subject and a commitment to attend and complete the course.
Progression
What opportunities will this lead to?
You may wish to progress to the Level 1 Certificates in the vocational areas. We also offer other evening courses in construction including: bricklaying, plastering, painting & decorating, plumbing and carpentry & joinery.
