L2 Diploma in Hospitality Services

Studying Hospitality and Catering will give you access to a team of experts who have professional experience of working at some of the region’s top hotels and restaurants. Through their extensive knowledge, you’ll learn how to develop the skills and techniques to make it as a hospitality team member or chef in our industry standard restaurant ‘Culinary’ and kitchen facilities.
Culinary is open to the general public for
lunch and dinner and hosts themed evenings throughout the year as well as hosting exciting college events such as the annual staff awards lunch.

This employer approved qualification is designed to meet the needs of learners who work or want to work in the industry and will give them a taste of various areas within hospitality and catering. This qualification is suitable for anyone either in employment or progressing from a level 1 qualification or those who are able to start a qualification at level 2.

Course Content

What Modules will you Study?

This is a vocational qualification that introduces you to working in the hospitality industry and gives you the opportunity to study topics such as food safety, basic food preparation and cooking, serving food and drink, preparing the dining area for service, customer service in the hospitality industry and introduction to meal planning and preparation, healthy eating, introduction to food commodities, using a variety of kitchen equipment, producing basic vegetable dishes, producing basic pasta dishes, completing kitchen documentation and working effectively as part of a hospitality team.

Throughout this qualification you will develop your practical skills, knowledge and understanding of relevant hospitality practices, health and safety, and customer service.

How will I learn?

You will learn through a mix of directed learning, on line activities and practical workshops and in your own work place.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through practical observations in a real working environment in college, oral questions, written tasks, assignments, an exam and witness testimonies

Entry Requirements

What are the entry requirements?

The Level 2 Diploma in Hospitality Services is a substantial vocational qualification that will prepare you for a career in the hospitality industry. This qualification is designed for learners aged 16 years or over with a strong emphasis on learning by doing. This qualification has been designed for those who have a keen interest in the subject, who have a minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above or a level 1 in Hospitality Services or other equivalent qualifications or experience.

If you do not currently hold grade 9-4 in GCSE English and maths these will be studied alongside your course.

Progression

What opportunities will this lead to?

Our students have progressed to a wide range of roles in within the Hospitality industry including sous chef, catering and restaurant team members and managers. Our courses will support you to develop your skills in teamwork and communication, customer service, commitment, organisation and flexibility. These are highly sought afte transferable skills. Further study in this sector could include an Apprenticeship or Travel & Tourism qualification.

Emma Bentley

Chef Emma began working in the hospitality and catering industry at the age of 15, gaining experience across kitchens, bakeries, butchers, cafes hotels and restaurants while studying. She trained professionally at Holker Hall, working to country house service standards and cooking for high profile guests including Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. She later broadened her experience in private catering, local cafes and a gastro pub. Emma brings real-world industry experience to every lesson.

Emma has 11 years' teaching experience and specialises in additional needs education. After completing her degree and PGCE in teacher training, she is now studying for a Master's in Education.

Lorna Claridge

After studying Hospitality Management in Manchester, Lorna gained hands on industry experience alongside her degree, working in a busy city-centre brasserie for renowned chef Paul Heathcote, as well as in events support and bar service roles. These early roles provided a strong grounding in front-of-house operations and customer service.

Following graduation, Lorna managed food and beverage operations at a private members' golf club in North London before moving to Lakeside Hotel, where she became hotel manager in 2003. Over 12 years, Lorna led the day to day running of an 80 bedroom four-star hotel, before moving into the role of HR and Training Manager. Lorna brought her extensive industry experience into education when she joined Furness College in 2021.
