Students quiz councillors during sixth form Question Time

Ben Shirley, Conservatives councillor for Dalton North, addresses students during a Question Time event at Barrow Sixth Form College

Students and staff at Barrow Sixth Form College had the opportunity to quiz local councillors at a Question Time event yesterday.

Ben Shirley, Conservatives councillor for Dalton North, and Brendan Sweeney, Labour councillor for Parkside, voiced their views on Barrow, benefits and Brexit during the event held at Furness College’s specialist sixth form campus.

A Level student Logan O’Brien, who acted as chair at the event, said: “This event was a fantastic opportunity for students to be able to ask questions to local councillors on local issues.

“When it comes to election time, many local issues are blocked out so we hope to arrange another event where students can voice their opinions and get answers on the issues that matter to them.

“Thank you to Ben Shirley and Brendan Sweeney for taking part.”

During the event, Councillors Shirley and Sweeney answered a number of questions submitted by students and staff.

These questions then opened up a debate with the audience on issues ranging from opportunities for young people in the area to homelessness and the impact of Brexit on Barrow and the Furness Area.

The Question Time event was open to all students at Furness College’s sixth form and Channelside campuses, and was well attended by those studying A Level Government and Politics or A Level Law.
