Furness Raiders secure win against Hopwood Hall College
Furness Raiders travelled to Rochdale on Wednesday to play Hopwood Hall College in the AoC Sport Rugby League Premier Division. The final score-line of 20-6 to the Raiders (their first success in four attempts against Hopwood) does not reflect their overall dominance, against a very determined and resilient opposition, the Raiders eventually outscored their opponents by five tries to one.
The Furness Raiders took the lead on 7 minutes when a great ball by Jake Carter put Adam Ford in for unopposed try in the corner and 20 minutes later the same player crossed for an almost identical try to give his side an 8-0 lead. Throughout the first half the Barrow side blew numerous chances and were punished two minutes before the break when Hopwood scored a converted try to make the half time score 8-6 to the Raiders. Just three minutes into the second half a great ball by Jake Stockdale put Tyler Lancaster in for a well worked try, but once again the conversion was missed.
Leading 12-6 the Raiders were forced to survive a good deal of pressure from their opponents but sealed the win with tries from Jake Carter on 62 minutes and Adam Ford (his hat trick) three minutes later. Jake Carter was once again excellent throughout and he constantly put Hopwood on the back foot. unsurprisingly he was the Hopwood coaches’ choice as man-of the match, though he was pushed close by Jake Stockdale, Tyler Batty, Danny Wright and Matty Brown who were all prominent throughout. Youngster Zac Steel again impressed in the second row while Adam Ford’s hat trick obviously was a major factor in the victory.
