Course Content

The apprenticeship will cover a wide range of knowledge, skills and behaviours all of which will assist the student in their day to day work duties. These will include:

  • Professionalism and values
  • Behaviours and communication
  • Safe working practices
  • Cut hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
  • Style and finish hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
  • Colour and lighten hair using a range of techniques
  • Hair extension services
  • Style and finish men’s hair
  • Cut facial hair into shape
  • Shaving services

What qualification will I achieve?

  • Successful apprentices on completion, will achieve the Level 2 Hair Professional Standard
    Functional skills in Maths and English would be achieved if the apprentices does not already hold the required qualification at the time of starting the apprenticeship standard.

How long is the course?

  • This apprenticeship will typically take 24 months.

How will I learn?

Embarking on a hairdressing apprenticeship, you will learn by working hands on in an often fast paced environment. You will attend College one day per week in addition to working in the salon for an additional four days. You will be paid the apprenticeship wage and will be a contracted employee of the company you work for. As your training begins you will study the underpinning knowledge required and you will train on the job as well as learning at College. You will fine tune your practical skills, knowledge and understanding, by performing various Level 2 Hairdressing services. There is also a requirement that you undertake targeted online study through our VLE, directly related to your course and employability. Any hand held media to bring for your studies at College would also be advantageous. Additionally, all Hairdressing programmes also include a compulsory attendance at either functional skills or a GCSE in a relevant qualification or Maths and English, for those participating in an apprenticeship programme.

What subjects will I study?

Training will include: Health & Safety, Consultation, Shampooing, Style and finish (blow drying, setting plaiting and added hair), cutting hair, Colouring and lightening hair.

How will I be assessed?

All units in this qualification need to be achieved before commencing the end-point assessment.

The following units will have an external examination to assess knowledge and understanding: 
• Consultation 
• Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp 
• Colour and lighten hair using a range of techniques 
• Perming hair 
• Hair relaxing treatments and techniques

The external examinations will be a Pass/Fail MCQ. You must achieve a pass mark of 70%.

Along with the hairdressing you must achieve a qualification in Maths and English (if not achieved GCSE C or above prior to starting the course).

The end point assessment will provide a snapshot holistic assessment of your practical skills, similar to an industry trade test. You will demonstrate that you can complete a range of services on a number of models to industry standards and within commercial timings. Your consultation skills, communication skills, safe working practices, professionalism, values and behaviours will be assessed by practical observation and oral questioning.

Are there any additional costs?

There is a specific dress code and students will be expected to provide their own equipment. There is a dress code of black tunic with red trim, black cardigan and black trousers for £70. (The uniform is to be purchased through college). Black flat closed toe shoes must be purchased independently. Examples of appropriate footwear can be shown to you at interview.

Entry Requirements

What are the entry requirements?

  • Individual employers set the selection criteria, but this is likely to include 5 GCSEs, including Maths and English, although some employers will accept other relevant qualifications and experience, including a relevant Level 2 qualification.
  • Apprentices without English or Maths at Level 2 must achieve this prior to taking the end point assessment.
