How long is the course?

Full-time over one year.

How will I learn?

This course is an introduction to catering and hospitality industry. As a student on this course you will have opportunities to develop basic skills and knowledge required by people wishing to be employed in the industry. You will receive practical training in the College kitchen to acquire the required practical skills, practical training in The Restaurant, study time for theory work that is organised through workbooks and tutor and individual tutorial support.

What subjects will I study?

This course is a good basic introduction to Investigating the Hospitality Industry. Units studied include: how to use kitchen equipment, basic food preparation and cooking, serving food and drink, healthy eating as well a personal development units such as working as a group, working towards goals, healthy living, managing your own money, managing social relationships and community action. Every full-time course will include a real experience of work. Maths and English form part of this course and will be assessed at the relevant levels.

How will I be assessed?

All the practical work is assessed in kitchen and the restaurant for the practical element and oral questions to prove knowledge. There are assignments and written tests. A portfolio of evidence is built up throughout the course.

Are there any additional costs?

This is a professional qualification and high standards of personal appearance and conduct will be required. All assessments are carried out in the restaurant and kitchen and must be to a professional standard. There is a dress code specific to the industry, a kit that includes your chef knives and a book that you are required to purchase through college and will cost around £180. Support may be available through Student Services if you meet eligibility criteria. The college provides all other equipment and tools needed for the course.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no entry requirements for this qualification, only a willingness to learn. You will be required to attend an interview and a diagnostic assessment for Literacy and Numeracy which will enable us to place you on the right course.
