Course Content

The apprenticeship will cover a wide range of knowledge and skills which will assist the student in their day to day work duties. These will include:

  • Health and Safety in the workplace
  • Erecting masonry cladding in the workplace
  • Erecting masonry structures in the workplace
  • Maintaining slate and tile roofing in the workplace
  • Confirming the occupational method of work in the workplace
  • Setting out complex masonry structures in the workplace
  • Producing external solid render finishes in the workplace

What qualification will I achieve?

  • Apprentices will achieve a practical (or competence) qualification NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations and will also achieve a theory based (or knowledge) qualification the Diploma in Bricklaying.
  • Functional skills in Maths and English would need to be achieved if the apprentices does not hold the required qualification at the time of starting the apprenticeship.

How long is the course?

This course will run one evening per week for 6 weeks.

How will I learn?

  • The apprenticeship will largely take place at the site of the employer, using day to day working activities to underpin knowledge that is learnt. A portion of the apprenticeship will take place at Furness College through classroom/work shop based learning. This is likely to be as part of a day release from the employer although each sector has differing delivery structure and this will be discussed with the employer and apprentice.

What subjects will I study?

Introduction to the techniques involved in Plastering and Rendering. This will include mixing materials, applying base and top coats using a float, and smoothing to a good finish. This will include repairs and maintenance to existing surfaces.

How will I be assessed?

  • The Apprenticeship is assessed on practical aptitude, a portfolio of work and assessment. The apprentice is assessed in lessons through assignments set by your tutors. Throughout the apprenticeship, students will build up a portfolio of work which will compromise of evidence produced in the work place. Maths and English are assessed by examination and a portfolio of evidence.

Are there any additional costs?

Students must supply and wear safety boots from the start of the course, otherwise they will not be allowed in the workshop. Overalls or very old clothes are essential. Course fee includes basic materials. However, if students wish to work with specialist materials they will have to provide their own.

Entry Requirements

What are the entry requirements?

  • Apprentices must have achieved the NVQ Level 2 tech cert in trowel occupations before undertaking the level 3 apprenticeship.
  • Individual employers set the selection criteria, but this is likely to include 5 GCSEs, including Maths and English, although some employers will accept other relevant qualifications and experience, including a relevant Level 2 qualification.
  • Apprentices without English or Maths at Level 2 must achieve this prior to completing the apprenticeship framework. ICT may also be a required, this would specified in the framework.
