How long is the course?
Full-time over two years.
How will I learn?
Classroom taught sessions provide the underpinning knowledge of the qualification. This is supported by a Virtual Nursery where students can practice work based skills in a non threatening environment.
Work placement provides students with the opportunity to be part of a real environment, putting their knowledge into practice and further developing skills.
What subjects will I study?
Your course will involve two days of work placement each week. This placement will provide you with experience in a variety of different settings throughout the year.
You will also study the following units:
• An introduction to working with children
• Development from conception to age 16 years
• Supporting children
• Keeping children safe
• Principles underpinning the role of the practitioner working with children
• Promoting a healthy environment for children
• Play and learning in children’s education
• Caring for children
• Development of professional skills with children’s education
Maths and English form part of this course and will be assessed at the relevant levels.
How will I be assessed?
Classroom sessions are assessed using discussions, questioning and tasks to complete a portfolio. Work placement is prepared for during classroom activities and assessed by observation by an assigned College Assessor. Students must be competent in both areas.
Are there any additional costs?
Due to the nature of the course – Working with Children – all students must have a DBS check. A College t-shirt is required for work placement.
What are the entry requirements?
Five GCSEs at grades A - C, grades 4/5 or above (including maths and English), a Level 2 Certificate in the Children and Young People's Workforce or other equivalent qualifications. Students must have a clear DBS certificate.

What opportunities will this lead to?
Students may be able to progress on to Furness College or university to study early years foundation degrees, nursing degrees or teacher training. Progression is based on aptitude and a successful interview. Our students are employed as nursery supervisors, pre-school/crèche/playgroup leaders, or nursery nurses.
