Foundation Degree in Computing

The overall aims of the programme are:
1. To enable students to develop understanding, skills and appreciation of relevant processes and theories in the application of computing/IT environment and to adapt to further development
2. To provide an understanding of the fundamental principles of the application of a range of design principles and the practical use and application of computing techniques in the development process of computing projects.
3. To provide opportunities to develop the qualities and professional skills necessary to function effectively in a ICT environment and support the attainment of relevant Computing skills.
4. To develop students’ abilities to apply independent critical thinking, communication skills and self-management skills to identify problems in their organisations and formulate and implement effective solutions
5. To encourage, develop and enable students to become independent learners with particular reference to the practical use and application of computing/IT
6. To provide opportunities, through optional modules and integrated work based learning, for students to gain additional knowledge of specialised aspects of Computing of relevance to their organisations
7. To provide a basis for progression in career and educational development through additional study for an honours degree

Full-time Two years Attendance: One day and a half per week, plus two days’ work placement Part-time Three years Attendance: One day per week, plus one day work placement PLEASE NOTE The timetabled hours for this course may be spread out across the week.

Entry Requirements

What are the entry requirements?

Students are normally expected to have at least four GCSE passes at grade C or equivalent and to have one pass at GCE A2 level (6 unit awards) or equivalent in a relevant subject (evidenced professional or work experience may demonstrate equivalence), typically 80 UCAS points. Minimum of grade C (GCSE) or level 2 in literacy and numeracy.

Non-standard entrants are required to demonstrate the ability to benefit from, and have prospect of, successfully completing the programme. In this connection, they may be required to demonstrate basic competencies and skills via prior experiential learning and/or such diagnostic assessment procedures as are deemed appropriate. Interviews and invitations to Open Days and/or taster Sessions will be used extensively to explore an applicant’s suitability for the programme.

Progression

What opportunities will this lead to?
