Course Content

How long is the course?

One evening and one morning over 34 weeks. The qualification will require at least an equal amount of home study and students are encouraged to read their text book and use the practice questions available in the text and via the AAT website.

How will I learn?

The course is classroom based (taught sessions and workshops). The use of electronic learning resources is encouraged e.g. the AAT's website learning resources and those available via the college's virtual learning environment (VLE).

What subjects will I study?

Basic Accounting 1 and Basic Accounting 2, which includes: • Double entry bookkeeping • Recording cash and credit transactions • Preparing and recording financial documentation • Maintaining and reconciling the cash book • Maintaining petty cash records • Processing business transactions and extracting a trial balance • Maintaining the journal and control accounts • Basic costing • Computerised accounting (SageLine50) • Working Effectively in Accounting and Finance • Professional Ethics in Accounting and Finance (Apprentices only)

How will I be assessed?

All units include a computer based assessment or project and these are held at the college.

Are there any additional costs?

The AAT charges an annual membership fee and an initial registration fee. These are essential costs which must be paid in order to undertake the course. In addition, there are books and stationery requirements for study. Book codes and details will be provided at the start of your course. Assessment fees are included in the course fee for first exam attempts. If a further attempt is needed, students must arrange to pay this as an additional cost. Entry Requirements

What are the entry requirements?

Students should have an adequate level of English (Level 2 or equivalent recommended) and Mathematics (Level 1 or equivalent recommended). The AAT requires that students disclose any criminal records or financial barriers to membership e.g. County Court Judgements, bankruptcy etc. Applicants should seek advice from the AAT (www.aat.org.uk) to ensure they can meet these requirements for AAT student membership before enrolment takes place.

Progression

What opportunities will this lead to?

Students can, in agreement with the college, progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Accounting.
