A Level Politics

Politics is brutal and politicians will do anything to obtain and hold onto power. If you take an interest in current affairs and enjoy debating current affairs and politics generally, our Politics A Level could be just the course for you. If you wish to study a subject that offers insight and want to experience the workings of real life events that affect your everyday life, you are in the right place. Will there be a new Prime Minister when you start the course? Will it be Boris? Will Brexit mean Brexit? Will Trump still be President of the USA? There are so many unanswered questions in politics. Join us to find out!

Course Content

Students develop a critical awareness of the nature of power and gain knowledge and understanding of the political system in the UK as well as detailed knowledge of political institutions and figureheads. Prime Ministers such as Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Theresa May will be studied in depth. Presidents such as Donald Trump, Barack Obama, George W Bush and Bill Clinton will be studied in depth. Students will also be encouraged to challenge their own political views with studies on; Liberalism, Conservatism, Socialism and Nationalism. Lessons tend to be interactive and you will learn through a variety of activities including role-play, pair and group work and individual research.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no specific entry requirements to study government and politics at this level, although you must meet the general entry requirements.


What opportunities will this lead to?

Students progress to a broad range of degrees that draw on the skills of argument and communication, all of which are honed on the course. Previous students include the Lancaster MP and Shadow Labour Cabinet Secretary, Cat Smith and the Brexit expert Adam Payne, journalist for Business Insider magazine.
