The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan)
HNC Electrical and Electronic Engineering will allow students to study industry relevant Engineering subjects, and develop the professional and personal skills required for employment within the Engineering industry.
Electrical and Electronic Aims:
To develop in students an understanding of and an ability to apply the basic concepts of relevant engineering disciplines
To develop in students an ability to Design & Implement engineering solutions
To provide skills in the communication of detailed solutions to design problems
To contribute to a students development as a professional engineer: including personal, intellectual, practical and managerial skills, in addition to fulfilling their vocational needs
To bear in mind the needs of local industry
What are the entry requirements?
120 UCAS tariff points at A Level within an appropriate subject
BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, with at least a Merit in six modules including both Further Maths and an appropriate Electrical science based module.
An alternative equivalent qualification in an appropriate subject at the appropriate level to be determined via interview.
5 GCSEs at grade C or above including Maths and English
Qualifications equivalent to the above.
Key skills in Mathematics level 2 will be accepted as an alternative for GCSE Mathematics
Key skills in Communication level 2 will be accepted as an alternative for GCSE English
What subjects will I study?
HNC Electrical and Electronic Engineering requires 120 credits including a minimum of 40 at Level 5 or above
FT1600 Electrical Principles - 10 credits
FT1601 Engineering Mathematics - 10 credits
FT1602 Analogue and Digital Electronics - 20 credits
FT1603 Electronic Systems - 20 credits
FT1604 Aspects of Industrial Management - 20 credits
FT2600 Engineering Project - 20 credits
FT2601 Linear Control Systems - 20 credits
How will I learn?
Acquisition of knowledge is mainly supported through lectures and directed learning. The role of directed learning increases as the course progresses. Understanding is reinforced through practical, tutorial and seminar work. This may involve a series of small exercises, extended case studies or discussions. Drop-in help sessions are provided to support particular areas.
How will I be assessed?
Informal and formative feedback is provided in tutorial, seminar and practical classes through class discussion and individual advice. Formal assessment is through practical and written coursework, and time-constrained examinations, which may include on-line multiple-choice exams, traditional examinations, open-book examinations and partially-seen questions.
What opportunities will this lead to?
Progression to B.Eng (Hons) Electrical Engineering.
Furness Colleges range of engineering programmes will enable students to gain employment and career progression as a professional engineer across a variety of industrial situations.
How long is the course?
Part-time: Two years
Attendance: Full day per week in term time
When is the next start date?
In 2017/18, the fees are: £992 per 20 credit module (£2976 per year) plus a one-off BTEC registration fee of £170 meaning that the total fee is of £3146 in 2017/18.
The full course fee over 2 years is £6122. Please note, fees are set and are payable on a yearly basis and are subject to a small increase in line with inflation.
