The AAT Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping (Level 2) is a short qualification that gives you a thorough foundation in bookkeeping and basic accounting practices, including double-entry bookkeeping.
The AAT Certificate in Bookkeeping is suited to people who:

? Are already working in finance and looking to back this up with a qualification
? Want to work in bookkeeping in a finance department or as an independent professional
? Run their own business and need to do their own bookkeeping.

What are the entry requirements?

Students should have an adequate level of English and Mathematics (Level 1 or equivalent recommended).

What subjects will I study?

Processing bookkeeping transactions
This includes:
? Understanding double-entry bookkeeping, integrating books of prime entry and describing coding system functions.
? Understanding discounts and settlement, trade and bulk discount differences.
? Preparing and processing customer and supplier invoices and credit notes.
? Totaling and balancing a 3-column analysed cash book.
? Totaling, balancing and reconciling petty cash records within an analysed petty cash book.
? Processing ledger transactions and extracting a trial balance.

Control accounts, journals and the banking system
This includes:
? Understanding the purpose and use of control accounts and journals.
? Maintaining and using control accounts and the journal.
? Reconciling a bank statement with the cash book.
? Understanding the banking process and main services of banks and building societies.
? Understanding requirements of retention and storage relating to banking documents.

How will I learn?

The course is classroom based (taught sessions and workshops).

The use of electronic learning resources is encouraged e.g. the AAT's website learning resources and those available via the college's virtual learning environment (VLE).

How will I be assessed?

Both units include a computer based assessment and these are held at the college.

What opportunities will this lead to?

Students can, in agreement with the college, progress to the Level 2 Certificate in Accounting or Level 3 Diploma in Accounting. You?ll also receive exemptions from the AAT Accounting Qualifications.

How long is the course?

One evening per week over 16 weeks.

The qualification will require at least an equal amount of home study and students are encouraged to read their text book and use the practice questions available in the text and via the AAT website.

Are there any additional costs?

There are no additional costs; the quoted fee includes all relevant registration, exam fees and course book(s).

The AAT charges an annual membership fee and an initial registration fee. These are essential costs which will be included in the course fee. Book codes and details will be provided at the start of your course. Assessment fees are included in the course fee for first exam attempts. If a further attempt is needed, students must arrange to pay this as an additional cost.
