Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art & Design


This course is for students who want to develop their creative skills through the use of both ICT and traditional art skills.

What are the entry requirements?

Five GCSEs at grade C or above, grades 4/5 or above, (including English and maths) or other equivalent qualifications. You will need to show a portfolio of completed artwork at interview.

What subjects will I study?

Units studied include: visual recording, ideas & concepts, materials techniques and processes, contextual influences, design methods, collaborative working, digital image capture & editing, specialist illustration, stop motion animation, application, exploration & realisation, promoting art & design work, mixed media, drawing concept art for computer games, drawing from observation, 3D design media and human scale design.

Every full-time course will include a real experience of work. You will have the opportunity to demonstrate your skills by undertaking real briefs for local organisations. Recent partners include the National Trust, Barrow Council, Art Gene and other local community organisations and businesses.

Maths and English form part of this qualification and will be assessed at the relevant levels.

How will I learn?

Studio workshops and demonstrations, lectures, seminars, project work, visits and exhibitions. You will also need to work independently outside the class.

How will I be assessed?

Portfolio assessment within college at student review sessions and external moderation of studio examined unit.

What opportunities will this lead to?

Students can progress to employment and/or continue their study in the same or related vocational area within higher education such as the BTEC Level 4 HNC & Level 5 HND in Art & Design at Furness College. Progression is based on aptitude and a successful interview.

How long is the course?

Full-time over two years.

Are there any additional costs?

£50 per year to cover materials - paper, photo, textiles, paint, sculpture materials, visits.
