VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Women's Hairdressing
The VTCT Level 3 Diploma in hairdressing (QCF) qualification aims to provide you with the knowledge, skills and understanding to be a hairdresser/stylist. This qualification is based on the Level 3 Hairdressing National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK?s leading professional hair associations as being fit for purpose to prepare you for a career as a hairdresser/stylist. If you want to further advance your existing hairdressing skills then this is the right course is for you.
What are the entry requirements?
To be accepted to study this qualification you should have successfully achieved one of the following; a Level 2 qualification in hairdressing, an intermediate apprenticeship in hairdressing or a skills test. An initial diagnostic online testing platform will be used to determine suitability for the course in all cases, regardless of academic entry starting point. You will also be required to attend an informal interview prior to acceptance on this course.
You don't need to be employed, however a work placement or planned work experience within the industry will be a valuable addition to your progression. At level 3, most employers look for work experience as an essential requirement for employment.
What subjects will I study?
The units you will study for this qualification, whilst at College will include the following:
• Health and safety
• Client consultatio
• Advanced cutting
• Styling and colouring techniques
• Selling products and services to clients.
The following optional units are available, subject to availability:
• Hair colour correction
• Specialist scalp services
• Bridal hairstyling
• Marketing for the hair and beauty sector
• Hair extension services
• Relaxing African type hair

This qualification's structure provides learners with the flexibility to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills depending upon their designated career pathway as a senior hairdresser/stylist.
Every full-time course will include a real experience of work. Maths and English form part of this course and will be assessed at the relevant levels.
How will I learn?
Embarking on a fulltime hairdressing study programme, you will learn by working in a realistic working environment at your own pace. As practical work begins you will study the underpinning knowledge required and your tutors will demonstrate any skills necessary. You will fine tune your practical skills, knowledge and understanding, by performing various Level 3 hairdressing services. There is also a requirement that you will undertake targeted online study, directly related to your course and employability. Hand held media to bring for your studies at College would be advantageous. Additionally, all study programmes also include a compulsory provision of either functional skills or a GCSE in a relevant qualification or Maths and English for those under 19 years of age. Those over 19 years of age are warmly invited to attend the functional skills/GCSE provision on offer also as part of their course, if desired.
All full time qualifications at Furness College require a set amount of independent study. At least 5% of the course content will be available for online access, found in our Virtual Learning Environment. You will be required to access this information to enhance your research, study and employability skills. These skills are all an essential part of your professional hairdressing qualification and contain the essential knowledge needed to be successful on your course and career progression.
How will I be assessed?
For practical elements, you will be observed formatively and sumatively by your assessor. Your work must be collected in a portfolio of evidence and referenced to awarding body requirements. All the practical work is assessed in the salon on fee paying clients and you will be required to build your own ?model? client base. You will also be assessed by oral questioning techniques and online exams to prove your subject knowledge. You will improve your study skills by learning to set short term targets for yourself and your tutor will help to formally assess your progress by providing additional feedback during 6 weekly reviews and tutorial sessions, throughout the year.
What opportunities will this lead to?
The main purpose of this qualification is to enable you to gain employment as a hairdresser/stylist in a commercial salon, or in one of the following career opportunities:
- Employed/Independent/self-employed/mobile/homebased settings
- Commercial salons
- Product manufacturing and training
- Television, film, theatre and media
- Armed services
- HM prison service
- Cruise liners
- Hospitals/care homes
Alternatively you may choose to develop your knowledge and skills to an advanced level by undertaking a Level 4 qualification:
- VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Salon Management (QCF)
- VTCT Level 4 Diploma in Salon Management (QCF)
- VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Specialist Hair and Scalp Services (QCF)
- VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Hair Colour Correction (QCF)
- VTCT Level 4 Award in Advanced Hair Styling (QCF)
How long is the course?
Full-time over one year.
The course usually consists of one evening per week of an open salon, for all Level 3 services on the programme.
Are there any additional costs?
This is a professional qualification and as such there is a strict salon dress code to follow. The uniform consists of a black/red tunic, black trousers and low heeled closed toe shoes. (The uniform to be purchased through college at a discounted price £65). Examples of appropriate footwear will be shown to you at interview.
There is also a hairdressing kit for purchase that will be compulsory to bring to all lessons (costs in the region of £110). This kit contains specific equipment that must be brought to every session. It is ordered via the College and full instructions on how to obtain, will be given at interview or sent when you are offered of a place on the course. In certain circumstances, you may be eligible for financial assistance via a means tested bursary. Further information is available from Student Services, behind main Reception.

Manchester Live? Hair and Barbering Show, usually takes place around March time, offering trade stands, celebrity stylist demonstrations and the latest in salon technologies are on offer to try. Aimed at salon professionals, the costs are around £20.
