VTCT Level 1 Diploma in an Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector
The qualification has been designed to prepare you for employment as a supervised assistant/apprentice or for further learning in the hairdressing and beauty therapy industries within college.
What are the entry requirements?
A minimum of two GCSEs at grades A-G or grades 9-1. You will be required to attend an interview and a diagnostic assessment for Literacy and Numeracy which will enable us to place you on the right course.
What subjects will I study?
Units studied include: ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety, prepare for hair services and maintain work areas, prepare and maintain salon treatment work areas, contribute to the development of effective working, shampoo and condition hair, assist with day make-up, assist with salon reception duties, blow dry hair, assist with hair colour services, plait and twist hair using basic techniques and assist with nail services.
Every full-time course will include a real experience of work.
Maths and English form part of this course and will be assessed at the relevant levels.
How will I learn?
Embarking on a full-time hairdressing and beauty study programme, you will learn by working in a real salon environment at your own pace. Before practical work begins you will study the underpinning knowledge required and your tutors may demonstrate the skills necessary. You will work on your practical skills, knowledge and understanding by performing various Level 1 Hairdressing and Beauty services. There is also a requirement that you will undertake targeted online study, directly related to your course and employability skills. Additionally all study skills programmes will also include a compulsory provision of either functional skills or a GCSE in a relevant qualificaition or maths and English for those under 19 years of age.
How will I be assessed?
For practical elements, you will be observed formatively and sumatively by your assessor. Your work must be collected in a portfolio of evidence and referenced to awarding body requirements. All practical work is assessed in the salon on clients or models and you will be required to build your own 'model' client base. You will also be assessed by oral questioning techniques and online exams to prove your subject knowledge. You will improve your study skills by learning to set short term targets for yourself and your tutor will help to formally assess your progress by providing additional feedback during 6 weekly reviews and tutorial sessions, throughout the year.

Full-time over one year.
Are there any additional costs?
There are recommended apps for digital media and hand held devices, approximately £3. There are free E Books available to assist you with your study at college.
This is a professional qualification and as such there is a very strict salon dress code to follow. This consists of a black/red tunic, black trousers and low heeled closed toe shoes. (The uniform to be purchased through college at a discounted price of £65). Examples of appropriate footwear can be shown to you at interview.
There will also be a hairdressing kit to purchase that will be compulsory to bring to all lessons (costs in the region of £115). This kit contains specific equipment that must be brought to every session. It is ordered via the College and full instructions on how to obtain it will be given at interview or will be sent to you when you are offerend a place on the course.
