VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Therapy General (QCF)


The VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy General (QCF) is a substantial vocational qualification for learners seeking a career as an employed and/or self-employed beauty therapist. This qualification is based on the beauty therapy National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK's leading professional bodies (The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) and the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT)) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a level 3 qualified beauty therapist.

What are the entry requirements?

Four GCSEs at grades A - D, grades 4/5 or above, (including English, maths and science) and a Level 2 Beauty Therapy or other equivalent qualifications. As this course contains a significant amount of science the science GCSE must be at grade C or above and you will be expected to sit an aptitude test. You will also be required to attend an interview.

Every full-time course will include a real experience of work.

Maths and English form part of this course and will be assessed at the relevant levels.

How will I learn?

Embarking on a full-time Beauty Therapy study programme, you will learn by working in a real salon environment, at your own pace. Before practical work begins you will study the underpinning knowledge required and your tutors will demonstrate the skills necessary.

There is also a requirement that you will undertake targeted online study, directly related to your course and employability skills. Additionally, all study programmes will also include a compulsory provision of either functional skills or a GCSE in a relevant qualification or Maths and English for those under 19 years of age. Those over 19 years of age are warmly invited to attend the functional skills/GCSE provision on offer also as part of their course, if desired.

All full time qualifications at Furness College also require an amount of independent study. At least 5% of the course content will be available for access on our Virtual Learning Environment. You will be required to access this information to enhance your research, study and employability skills. These are all an essential part of your professional beauty therapy qualification and contain the essential knowledge needed to be successful on your course.

How will I be assessed?

For practical elements, you will be observed formatively and summatively by your assessor. Your work must be collected in an online portfolio of evidence and referenced to awarding body requirements. All practical work is assessed in the salon on fee paying clients and you will be required to build your own ?model? client base. You will also be assessed by oral questioning techniques and online exams to prove your subject knowledge. You will improve your study skills by learning to set short term targets for yourself and your tutor will help to formally assess your progress by providing additional feedback during 6 weekly reviews and tutorial sessions, throughout the year.

What opportunities will this lead to?

Career opportunities as a beauty therapist exist in a variety of contexts, including:

- Commercial beauty salons and spa?s
- Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
- Beauty retail concessions

Whilst this qualification's primary purpose is to prepare learners for employment as a qualified beauty therapist, learners may choose to develop their skills further by undertaking Technical Level qualifications in beauty therapy at Level 4 or short courses to enhance your skills.

Progression is based on aptitude and a successful interview.

How long is the course?

Full-time over one year - three days at college plus work experience. Attendance may also include some evenings.

Are there any additional costs?

This is a professional qualification and as such there is a very strict salon dress code to follow.

There is a dress code of black tunic with red trim, black cardigan and black trousers for £70. (The uniform is to be purchased through college). Black flat closed toe shoes must be purchased independently. Examples of appropriate footwear can be shown to you at interview.

During the academic year we organize various trips such as Manchester Professional Beauty and short courses to gain extra skills, for example Caflon ear piercing or Sienna X Tanning. The costs are around £25 each.
