What are the entry requirements?
Five GCSEs at grade C or above or grades 4/5 or above (including English, science and maths). You will be required to attend an interview.
What subjects will I study?
The course will explore and develop practical skills in the science underpinning modern medicine. There are a wide variety of subjects covered in the course, such as genetics and genetic engineering, the biology of disease and infection, analytical chemical techniques and Human Physiology. Units studied may include: an investigative project, laboratory techniques, contemporary issues in science, principles and applications of science, microbiology, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry and genetics.
Every full-time course will include a real experience of work.
Maths and English form part of this course and will be assessed at the relevant levels.
How will I learn?
Through practical workshops and sessions. In addition, you will undertake assignment work and will be expected to do work in your own time.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is ongoing throughout the course and is supported by practical assignments tasks and projects. There are no exams.
What opportunities will this lead to?
You can progress on to a Laboratory Technician (Higher Apprenticeship) or to university to study a number of subjects including the sciences, pharmacy, forensics, nursing, radiography or pathology. These qualifications would lead into jobs such as a biologist, laboratory technician, pharmacist or chemist.
How long is the course?
Full-time over two years.
