The Furness College School Liaison team is dedicated to working in partnership with schools and colleges to raise awareness of the further education and higher education programmes available, in order to help young people make informed decisions about their future and help raise aspirations.

We offer a variety of activities, presentations and workshops, both at college and in schools, to enable students to discover the range of opportunities available to them when they leave school.

Furness College Client Liaison Co-ordinator

Sandra Rollinson is the Client Liaison Co-ordinator for Furness College. Sandra holds a wide range of vocational qualifications including an NVQ3 in Information, Advice and Guidance alongside a Higher Education Certificate through Lancaster University. She worked at the Connexions careers guidance service for ten years before joining Furness College in 2005 and working in Student Services and School Liaison. She has extensive experience of liaising with all secondary schools in the South Lakes and Furness Peninsula.

Calendar of Events 2016 - 2017

Our advice and guidance events provide an excellent opportunity to explore the Furness College campus, view the facilities and talk to tutors about the extensive range of courses on offer. Student Ambassadors will also be on hand to talk about their own college experience.

The Furness College University Education Taster Evening provides Year 12/13 students with the opportunity to meet subject tutors and experience a short lesson as well as providing useful information on the application process and fees.

Advice and Guidance events will take place on the following dates:

Careers Fair

University Education Taster Evening

Introduction to Furness College and Barrow Sixth Form College

Approximate timings 20 minutes maximum
Age group: Year 9, 10, 11

We can provide a short presentation (suitable for assemblies) which gives an overview of both colleges’ facilities and the courses available.

In-depth Workshops

Approximate timings from 30 minutes
Age group: Year 9, 10, 11

A more in-depth workshop session will include further information about courses, entry requirements, apprenticeships and student life at college. Students will have the opportunity to have all their questions answered and receive advice on the application and interview process.

All presentations and workshops can be tailored to suit the needs of the school.

In School Specialist Subject Area Activity

Approximate timings from 30 minutes
Age group: All years

These school visits provide an interactive lesson based on specialist subject areas. They provide information about course content, entry requirements, progression routes, career opportunities and enrichment activities.

Parents’ Evenings, Option Evenings, Careers Events & Speed Networking

A member of the School Liaison Team is available to attend these events to offer information and guidance to students and parents regarding post-16 options and university degree programmes provided at Furness College.

Year 10 Taster Days

Approximate timings are half or full days
Age group: Year 10

These taster sessions provide students with the opportunity to get a taste of a range of subjects, as well as gaining an insight into college life and the chance to explore the facilities available to support their learning.

Furness College After School Clubs

We can provide staff and resources for afternoon clubs either at school or in college. These were introduced for the first time last year and have proved very popular with young people. Students commit to three or four weeks of after school activities - the length and time is different for each curriculum area. These sessions are very hands-on as well as providing information about career opportunities in the sector.

University Degree Presentations

Approximate timings from 30 minutes
Age group: All years

These presentations focus on the opportunities for studying university degrees at Furness College. The talk provides information on the application process, funding, entry requirements, course details, study skills as well as facilities and resources.

Age group: All years
