Spot Light on University Education Success

Enthusiastic student volunteer Ricky Mason so impressed his Furness College tutors that he has been nominated for a prestigious university award.

Ricky started on his BTEC diploma in multi-media four years ago and, once that was achieved, went on to gain a distinction in a Foundation Degree in New Media Design and Technology. He worked on community projects, using his artistic and multi-media skills to create art work; film and edit videos for Youth Reaction Team, the BBC and Signal films and create videos for use in the college. He contributed to college life by participating in the annual fashion show every year, tackling the seven peaks challenge, volunteering in Romania and clocking up more than 500 hours of voluntary work with charities and organisations locally.

Ricky’s contributions to the community earned him a nomination for the University of Central Lancashire – UCLan– Tim Curtis Award. The award is given in honour of the former UCLan deputy director and a pioneer of cross-sector collaboration to recognise and celebrate the achievements of students in the UCLan Partnership network.

Ricky is heading for UCLan to top-up his Foundation Degree into a full honours degree. He will receive the award at a UCLan ceremony in October. As a result of his achievements Ricky was chosen as speaker at Furness College’s latest University Awards Night, which celebrates the success of the students studying at Furness College with participating university partners – the University of Central Lancashire UCLan, Lancaster University and the University of Cumbria.

Awards went to 140 students, achieving among them 12 BEng (Hons), six of them first class; 23 BEng Ordinary degrees; 36 Foundation Degrees in Computing, New Media Design and Technology, ICT, Health and Social Care, Construction, Early Years and Education and Care; 47 HNCs in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering and 22 PGCE or Certificate in Education.
