No-one was more shocked than Neva Danson when special awards were being handed out at Furness College cross curricular awards evening.
After leaving sixth form Neva, now 20, from Ulverston, went to Furness College to study the BTEC national award and the higher national certificate, both in business. She chose college over university because she “didn’t want to end up with a huge debt”. All the time she studied she made sure she was working as well. She said: “I wanted to do something with accountancy but couldn’t get an apprenticeship straight away so I applied for the BTEC and really enjoyed it. Then I did the second one, which was a lot harder, but I worked hard and I got a distinction in both so I am pleased with myself.” Students on the course were given a business event to organise. Neva decided to hold a careers convention, attracting 14 businesses to the smooth-running event held in college. She said: “I was so pleased on the day – it lifted a weight from my shoulders. I found what I could do and I was amazed.”
Neva’s business tutor Karen Parker was impressed with the “exceptionally hard-working student”. Karen said: “Neva was never daunted by the scale of the event she had chosen to run and her professional approach, enthusiasm and positive attitude was an example to the whole class.” Neva said: “I always thought it was no good planning for a pass or a merit. You might as well do the best you can. I always got a distinction.” Neva is continuing working at The Old Farmhouse while now looking for a job that uses her qualifications.
Daniel Williams, who won the Construction Award for his work on the Level Two Diploma in construction, was named overall 16-18years award winner. His tutor Darran Curtis said: “Daniel is an excellent example to others as he gives maximum effort. The success he has achieved has all been due to his hard work.”
