Tasters a chance to try something new

Over two hundred year 10 pupils from the Furness Academy took part in the two one day taster events – Thursday 7th July and Friday 8th July.

The taster days involved the students experiencing two different curriculum areas from a range of subjects including Art & Design (Graphical), Beauty, Brickwork, Carpentry & Joinery, IT and Digital Graphics, Catering, Enterprise, Early Years, Engineering, Creative Media, Hairdressing, Health and Social Care , Motor Vehicle, Painting & Decorating, Plastering, Public Services and Sport.

During the tasters days the students experienced the world of further education including finding out about courses for their future careers and progression routes into university.

The students thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Furness College; many having visited the college for the first time. The tasters gave many a new insight into different curriculum areas and the opportunity to have a go at something new. 15 year old Katie Gaskell said, “I chose to do carpentry and joinery as I wanted to try something different. I’ve really enjoyed the fact that we’ve had a go at lots of things and learnt something new and the tutors have been great.”

Jane Ridyard, Director of Curriculum at Furness College explains. “We are committed to encouraging young people to continue their education after 16 and recognise the importance of giving students the opportunity to experience a Further Education College environment. This programme provides students with an ideal opportunity to sample a variety of vocational areas and may also help to give direction to those students for future career choices.”
