Equality & Diversity
The college is committed to:
- Greater representation from those groups in society who are traditionally under-represented and disadvantaged
- Eradicating discrimination of any kind
- Celebrating diversity
- Providing equal opportunities for all whatever ethnicity, gender, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation, disability or age
- Providing purpose-built facilities, qualified support staff, specialist equipment and courses that make learning and success inclusive to all
Equality & Diversity Data collection and Monitoring
Monitoring ethnicity, gender, and disability, is now commonplace in educational establishments' delivery. Indeed such monitoring has become the mainstay of modern equality policies, with all the Equality Commissions recommending this in their Codes of Practice as a vital tool for equity in employment and service delivery.
In order to meet Equality & Diversity legislation, Furness College has:
- developed information and monitoring systems which allow progress to be assessed in achieving targets
- measured progress against targets
- produced monitoring reports at specified intervals which are circulated to designated committees, Principalship and governors

For our detailed report outlining our complience with the Equality Duty, January 31st 2012 click here.
In compliance with the Equality Duty by 31 January 2012, Furness College’s Equality Objectives are published below:
These objectives encompass the three aims of the Equality Duty. They provide an overview of the progress of Furness College based on equality issues affecting our service users and employees.
Objective 1: To improve the collection and analysis of learner application data and conversion to enrolment by agreed protected characteristics and to report annually every November from 2012
Rationale
Data is collected at application on learners’ age, gender, ethnicity and learning difference/disability but the analysis of this data through the admissions process and conversion into enrolments is underdeveloped. The college has decided not to systematically gather data on protected characteristics such as sexual orientation, transgender, religion or pregnancy but learners are given the opportunity to raise such issues and any support needs at interview.
Objective 2: To reduce the achievement gap between 16-18 and 19+ learners by raising the long course success rate to at least national rate by July 2014.
Rationale
In 2010-11 long course success rates for 19+ learners were 9% lower than for those aged 16-18. Nationally there is currently a 4.6% difference between these age groups and a college priority is to reduce the achievement gap by at least raising the success rate for 19+to national rate by July 2014 whilst still maintaining the relatively high success rates of learners aged 16-18.
Objective 3: To reduce the gender imbalance in participation rates in each vocational area by 5% by July 2014
Rationale
In most curriculum areas there is a marked imbalance in male/female participation rates as is the case nationally. The college will continue to challenge gender stereotyping in recruitment to apprenticeships and learner responsive provision but also acknowledges that ability to impact upon culturally embedded attitudes and expectations is limited.
