Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education (Early Years Educator)
This qualification prepares learners to become Early Years Educators enabling them to work with children from birth to 5 years and gain knowledge of children aged 5 to 7 years. Upon achievement of this qualification learners will be able to enter the workforce as Early Years Educators or access Higher Education.
The qualification is a 2 year full time course which includes 3 days per week College classroom based learning alongside a 2 day per week placement in an early years environment. Subjects covered include: child development from birth to 7 years, child health, play and learning, understanding childrens additional needs, preparing for school readiness, international perspectives and reflective practice for professional development. Assessment is made through formative grading of portfolio work, observations of placement practice and controlled assessments at the end of year 1 and year 2.
What are the entry requirements?
Five GCSEs at grades A - C, grades 4/5 or above (including maths and English) or other equivalent qualifications.
Students must have a clear DBS certificate and will be required to attend an interview.
What subjects will I study?
The Certificate is studied in the first year and progression to the diploma in the second year will be based on successful completion of the certificate and passing the work placement element.
Your course will involve two days of work placement each week. This placement will provide you with experience in a variety of different settings throughout the year.
You will also study the following units:
An introduction to working with children
Development from conception to age 16 years
Keeping children safe
Principles underpinning the role of the practitioner working with children
Promoting a healthy environment for children
Play and learning in childrens education
Caring for children
Development of professional skills with childrens education
Maths and English form part of this course and will be assessed at the relevant levels.
How will I learn?
Classroom taught sessions provide the underpinning knowledge of the qualification. This is supported by a Virtual Nursery where students can practice work based skills in a non threatening environment.
Work placement provides students with the opportunity to be part of a real environment, putting their knowledge into practice and further developing skills.
How will I be assessed?
Classroom sessions are assessed using discussions, questioning and tasks to complete a portfolio. Work placement is prepared for during classroom activities and assessed by observation by an assigned College Assessor. Students must be competent in both areas.
What opportunities will this lead to?
Students may be able to progress on to Furness College or university to study early years foundation degrees, nursing degrees or teacher training. Progression is based on aptitude and a successful interview. Our past students are employed as nursery supervisors, pre-school/crèche/playgroup leaders, or nursery nurses.
How long is the course?
The course is full-time over two years.
Are there any additional costs?
Due to the nature of the course Working with Children all students must have a DBS check. A College t-shirt is required for work placement.
