Subject Set: English Language and Literature

Summary

The Level 3 English forms part of the Access to HE Diploma. It is not a stand alone qualification.

What are the entry requirements?

Evidence of recent study and preferably a GCSE grade C or level 4 in English and mathematics.

What subjects will I study?

The course is composed of a number of units. You will take a compulsory English Language unit, three other units from Literature and a combined English Language and Literature unit.

This course is designed to enable you to develop an awareness of the structure of the English Language and of its case in varied situations and circumstances. You will be encouraged to develop the skills of critical awareness, observation and analysis.

You will be able to study a variety of English literary texts and will acquire an understanding of language and literature as a reflection of cultural, artistic, intellectual or philosophical movements and issues.

How will I learn?

The Level 3 units are designed to develop an understanding of the subject area and the study skills necessary for entry to higher education. You will be encouraged to draw upon your own experience and knowledge to contribute to class sessions and you will be offered guidance and support in successful independent study. Learning methods will include a mixture of discussion, group work, presentations, workshops and tutorials.

How will I be assessed?

There will be one assignment for the English Language unit, three assignments for the English Literature units and an examination at the end of the course which will cover language and literature topics.

What opportunities will this lead to?

As part of the Access course, Level 3 units are recognized as suitable entry qualifications for institutes of Higher Education.

How long is the course?

You will attend two classes for 2.5 hours per week (5 hours in total) over 1 year from September to June.

Are there any additional costs?

You may be required to buy recommended texts. You will be advised about this by the tutor at the first session.
