Laboratory Science Pre-apprenticeship

Summary

The Pre-Apprenticeship in Laboratory Science is a new level 2 qualification designed to help students progress onto an apprenticeship or further study within the sciences. The course is both theoretical and practical, offering a substantial amount of laboratory based work experience. This experience will be based within local companies such as GSK (Ulverston) and Wax Lyrical (Lindal). As part of the course you will also be guaranteed an exit interview, for a potential apprenticeship at one of the supporting employers, and you will have an automatic entry to the level 3 Applied Science course based at Furness College.

The Pre-Apprenticeship in Science programme is a government backed scheme, supported by Cogent, the Sector Skills Council, to support progression into to employment.

What are the entry requirements?

You must be aged between 16 and 18 and have a minimum grade D in both GCSE Maths and English. You must not have a full level 3 qualification- e.g. two or more A Levels or an Extended National Diploma. You also must be working less than 16 hours a week.

What subjects will I study?

The course will explore key scientific topics within chemistry, biology and physics, alongside health and safety and understanding the Science industries. This will include: basic chemical laboratory techniques and the key biological systems of the human body. You will also be required to improve your maths and English if you have not already achieved a grade C in your GCSE Maths and English.

How will I learn?

The sessions will include practical work, group work, discussions and presentations.

How will I be assessed?

You will be expected to produce written work that includes a scientific investigation and report.

What opportunities will this lead to?

Progression to a science based apprenticeship, the level 3 Applied Science and then to a degree in science.

How long is the course?

The course is 21 weeks.
