Summary

The VTCT Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy General (QCF) is a substantial vocational qualification for learners seeking a career as an employed and/or self-employed beauty therapist. This qualification is based on the beauty therapy National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK's leading professional bodies (The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) and the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT)) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a junior beauty therapist.

What are the entry requirements?

Four GCSEs at grades A - D, grades 4/5 or above, (including English and maths) a Level 1 in Hairdressing/Beauty Therapy or other equivalent qualifications. As this course contains a significant amount of science the science GCSE must be at grade C or above and you will be expected to sit an aptitude test. You will also be required to attend an interview.

You will need to have a placement in a local salon as an apprentice.

What subjects will I study?

Units studied include:

• Enhance the appearance of eyebrows and eyelashes
• Carry out waxing services
• Provide manicure services
• Provide pedicure services
• Develop and maintain effectiveness at work
• Promote additional services or products to customers
• Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety
• Provide make-up services
• Assist with spa operations

As part of your apprenticeship you will also need to complete an Award in Employment Awareness in the Hair and Beauty Sector.

Maths and English form part of this course and will be assessed at the relevant levels.

How will I learn?

All the practical work is assessed in salon on clients. You will also prove your knowledge of practical work through oral questions. There are assignments and on line tests in each area. A portfolio of evidence is built up throughout the course.

How will I be assessed?

All the practical work is assessed in salon and workplace on clients. A work place assessor will track progress and carry out assessments in your workplace 2 hours per week every 2 – 3 weeks. You will also prove your knowledge of practical work through oral questions. There are assignments and on line tests in each area. A portfolio of evidence is built up throughout the course.

This is a professional qualification and high standards of personal appearance and conduct will be required.

What opportunities will this lead to?

Career opportunities as a junior beauty therapist exist in a variety of contexts, including:

- Commercial beauty salons
- Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
- Beauty retail concessions

Whilst this qualification's primary purpose is to prepare learners for employment as a junior beauty therapist, learners may choose to develop their skills further by undertaking Technical Level qualifications in beauty therapy at Level 3, including:

- VTCT Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Beauty Therapy General (QCF)
- VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Therapy Studies (QCF)

Progression is based on aptitude and a successful interview.

How long is the course?

12 – 18 months – You will attend one or two days at college and work for the rest of the week in a local salon.

Are there any additional costs?

There is a dress code of black tunic with red piping trim, black cardigan and black trousers for £70. (The uniform is to be purchased through college). Black flat closed toe shoes must be purchased independently.

There is also a beauty therapy kit to purchase that will be compulsory to bring to all lessons (costs in the region of £120). This kit contains specific equipment that must be brought to every session. It is ordered via the College and full instructions on how to obtain, will be given at interview or will be sent to you when you are offered of a place on the course.

During the academic year we organize various trips such as Manchester Professional Beauty and short courses to gain extra skills, for example Caflon ear piercing or Sienna X Tanning. The costs are around £25 each.
